The biggest reason to limit them is that ICANN might create that tld and we would be in the .free situation all over again.

I’m in strong favor of increasing the amount of TLDs we operate, there’s no
reason to limit them, it’s an arbitrary restriction some people enjoy
placing on our network. I am definitely opposed to people just coming out
of the blue and thinking they can just get a TLD however, because it
actually requires some effort and long-term planning—TLDs are supposed to
last forever, and frankly with the latest submissions I’ve seen, I don’t
have strong faith in these operators to stick around if/when they get
bored.

That being said, I’d be happy to approve more TLDs, I just want some kind
of proof that the operators doing these proposals will actually be able to
deliver.

Indeed, everyone and their brother wants a TLD now. I mean it's a good
thing we have increased interest in OpenNIC, but before proposing TLDs we
need the infrastructure and commitment per our recent votes on policy
changes.

It sounds like this person wants multiple TLDs, but perhaps instead of
voting one-by-one he should list the remaining TLD ideas he has into a
single discussion thread, and have a single voting thread where we vote on
each TLD. Anyone agree that's a better idea?

To me there is no practical logic to creating any
more TLDs. People like to create them, and the pleasure
they get from that seems to be what it's about. I do
support that, but we certainly don't need any more
TLDs. There are plenty of domains still available
on the TLDs we have and in reality they can be used for
anything you want. To me the bottom line is that we have
yet to get anything to take off and be viable as an
alternative to the ICANN net. It is only our DNS which
is a great success.
