I believe what Niels was saying is that a fast DNS not only reply to pings quickly, but also responds to DNS queries quickly.
In many cases it is true to have a fast ping but a slower DNS query return time.
However, a faster ping on a DNS server generally means a faster return time on your DNS query.

Point being, a ping does the job of finding the closer DNS server, but of the (for instance top 5) closest servers you should do a dig to find the fastest response times.
I am currently implementing this idea in my OpenNIC windows app.

no, this just tells you how "fast" the SNMP implementation of a specific host does answering your requests ;)

Benchmarking a DNS is a little bit. more tricky...
