But not for DNS "speed" of a server as this highly differs from just
latencies and could be a multiple of it.

I.e. if you have a "nice" short ICMP latency to a T2 which has a hundreds of
milliseconds path to roots it would react slow in many cases. Another factor
is how much he cached and how much of that fit's your "typically" required
zone data, the load of that machine and i.e. configured limits. Another part
is possible bandwidth management or traffic shapings on pathes to and
"behind" the T2 etc..

On the other hand, ICMP implementations could react much slower then others
resulting in a "long path" where is a short one.

So ping is not the half of the truth... ;(
