Zope and plone both make me shudder.

Typo3 might be a more accessible alternative. Or even CMSMadeSimple,
which truly is simple to use and yet remarkable capable and extendible.

Another thought would be to use a wiki. Dokuwiki can be used very
effectively as a CMS. It is easy to create identical extensions in
either dokuwiki or cmsms, and to produce apparently identical websites
with either tool.

Final thought: if people don't like php, how about a perl-based cms.
Foswiki or MovableType could be good choices perhaps.
