Sure, maybe we don't need them, just thinking about what someone said...

The idea wasn't about fulfilling anyone's social needs but that of a
different way of approaching the promoting of the group. A more social
one. Some of us do like being sociable!

Also, for me it was an alternative to flying around the world costing
money that could be spent on the network (if not elsewhere) and not on
polluting the environment. (I realise that some of you may be travelling
to the U.S. for other reasons, not just for a meet-up).

It's also easier to get more people from the group together in one
(virtual) place at the same time.

But as I said, just ideas (and not even mine, Jon Hebbs').
