"Close to you" doesn't mean next door or round the corner, it could
be many miles away on a completely different part of the
international network, but none the less, closer than other servers,
see above for relevance there.

Then ping- or other, but ping is easiest- tests should be done.

This is a bit like an IRC channel I'm in that has a ban listing for
suspected "superuser-run" IRC clients. If you really want to do
something that's fine, but be effective about it.

Geo-location generally doesn't provide you with faster or more reliable response times. If you want to give people faster response times, they'll need to check those times themselves. Now, that's nearly impossible to do cleanly (without popping some bloated or ugly applet in), so be it. Just making a point.
