I'm confused on the .free  issue since I am under the impression that ICANN isn't taking tld applications until 2017.
Can someone bring me up to speed?

Yeah, I don't hold out much hope for it personally, but at the same time, the chances of success if we do nothing are zero, so it doesn't hurt to at least give a try.  I think we should definitely consider things as if the answer is "no" so we have plans in place, but it doesn't hurt to at least give them the chance to tell us to sod off, both because on the off chance they're willing to coexist and work out a resolution policy it would be a big boost for OpenNIC IMO, and because if they do tell us to sod off, it can't be said that OpenNIC didn't try to reach out and reason with them about the conflict.

They (ICANN) are almost certainly not good neighbors. If you're referring to Amazon we might have a better chance with them but I'd still put it down to virtually 0.

Also I don't think any OpenNIC TLD operator wants anything to do with an ICANN TLD operator anyways. The fact of the matter is ICANN has claimed it basically and we can't feasibly coexist with an ICANN counterpart.
