I do feel it is a bit redundant to the official .ru TLD and the main benefit advertised seems to be that it's free to register.

First of all it`s free. Second thing is that it`s independent. Third it`s alternative.

I am also unsure about this — are we going to aim to have an alt-ccTLD for every country?
I know we have .oz, but that was a long time ago.
If we start allowing them, everyone will want one for their country and people who just want a TLD will be able to get one with relatively little real work (and therefore won't think much of it).
And why not ? What are you afraid of ?
It`s always good when people have choice ! Maybe this will be that thing that people are looking for.
Free alternative and idea of alternative to ICANN can attract people and OpenNIC project need people. Without people project is dead.
For us it`s just several strings in DNS config and for people it can be that thing to join OpenNIC.
So again - country TLD ? Why not ? Do it ! As many TLDs that OpenNIC will have then better for OpenNIC it will be because people cat find what they are looking.

That said, Russia is a big country and it is also an interesting idea to bring in people from that part of the world. I like the idea of OpenNIC getting more global interest. However,
will there actually be people using this TLD? There isn't much use of the current ones.
In Russia we have proverb:
Literal version: If you're afraid of wolves, don't go to the woods.
English version: If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

I do not get tired of repeating: If you do not try to do anything, then nothing will happen.
Time will show if it will be usable or useless. But I know that it can be attracting thing.

I do not understand such resistance... As if something bad will happen if OpenNIC will receive new TLD.
For my opinion it`s very good if people join and try to do something in and for the project. It`s VERY good because it`s show that project is still in demand by the people.
DNS structure is for TLD carring and this is her destiny or it is completely useless.
